Connect a client
Step-by-step instructions to add the DocuTray MCP server to Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code and Copilot Studio.
Every client uses the same server URL:
https://app.docutray.com/api/mcpThe first time a client calls a tool, it opens the DocuTray sign-in page. The flow is the same everywhere:
- Sign in with your DocuTray account (email and password, Google, or your two-factor method if you enabled it).
- Pick the organization the client will work with. If you belong to only one, it is preselected.
- Review the permissions the client asks for and click Allow. See Scopes for what each one grants.
The client then receives a short-lived access token for that organization and renews it on its own. You can revoke it at any time from Connected apps.
Client menus change often. If a step below does not match what you see, look for the option to add a custom connector, remote MCP server or MCP tool and paste the server URL — the sign-in flow is the same.
Claude (web, desktop and mobile)
- Open Settings → Connectors in claude.ai or Claude Desktop.
- Click Add custom connector.
- Enter
DocuTrayas the name andhttps://app.docutray.com/api/mcpas the URL, then click Add. - Click Connect next to DocuTray and complete the sign-in.
- In a conversation, enable DocuTray from the tools menu.
On Team and Enterprise plans an owner may need to add the connector for the organization first. Connectors added on the web are also available in Claude Desktop and the mobile apps.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http docutray https://app.docutray.com/api/mcpAdd --scope user to make the server available in every project, or
--scope project to share it with your team through .mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"docutray": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.docutray.com/api/mcp"
}
}
}Then run /mcp, select docutray and choose Authenticate. Claude Code
opens the browser and listens on a local port for the result.
Prefer a packaged setup? The DocuTray plugin
bundles this MCP server with the docutray skill, which teaches the agent the
conversion workflow end to end.
ChatGPT
- Open Settings in chatgpt.com and go to the plugins (formerly Apps & Connectors) section.
- If DocuTray is not listed in the directory yet, open Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
- Click Create (or Add custom plugin), enter
DocuTrayas the name andhttps://app.docutray.com/api/mcpas the URL, and choose OAuth as the authentication method. - Complete the sign-in, then enable DocuTray from the composer's tools menu.
Developer mode availability depends on your ChatGPT plan and, on Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces, on your admin's settings.
Cursor
Click the button to install the server:
Or add it by hand to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (all projects) or
.cursor/mcp.json (one project):
{
"mcpServers": {
"docutray": {
"url": "https://app.docutray.com/api/mcp"
}
}
}Open Cursor Settings → MCP, find DocuTray and click Login (or Needs login) to complete the sign-in.
VS Code (GitHub Copilot)
From a terminal:
code --add-mcp '{"name":"docutray","type":"http","url":"https://app.docutray.com/api/mcp"}'Or add it to .vscode/mcp.json in your workspace (or run MCP: Add Server
from the Command Palette):
{
"servers": {
"docutray": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://app.docutray.com/api/mcp"
}
}
}Click Start above the server entry, accept the authentication prompt and complete the sign-in. The DocuTray tools then appear in Copilot Chat's Agent mode tool picker.
Copilot Studio
- Open your agent and go to Tools → Add a tool → New tool → Model Context Protocol.
- Fill in:
- Server name:
DocuTray - Server description:
Extract structured data from documents with DocuTray. - Server URL:
https://app.docutray.com/api/mcp
- Server name:
- Under Authentication, choose OAuth 2.0 → Dynamic discovery.
- Click Create, then create a new connection and complete the sign-in.
If your tenant requires a pre-registered OAuth application (Manual OAuth), contact support@docutray.com with the redirect URL that Copilot Studio shows. We issue a client ID and secret for your tenant.
Other clients
Any client that implements the MCP authorization
spec
over Streamable HTTP can connect. The server supports the 2025-06-18,
2025-11-25 and 2026-07-28 protocol versions, and earlier ones. Clients discover the
authorization server from the WWW-Authenticate header of the first 401
response, which points to:
https://app.docutray.com/.well-known/oauth-protected-resource/api/mcpAPI keys are not accepted on the MCP endpoint. To call DocuTray with an API key, use the REST API, the SDKs or the CLI.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| The client says it needs to authenticate again | Access tokens last 15 minutes and are renewed automatically. If renewal fails (for example after you revoked access or left the organization), reconnect. |
403 insufficient_scope when converting | The connection was authorized without docutray:convert. Reconnect and approve the conversion permission. |
| "This tool requires the docutray:convert scope" | Same as above. |
| The client keeps asking to sign in right after connecting | You are no longer a member of the organization picked at consent. Reconnect and pick another one. |
| A conversion returns a non-final status | Large documents take longer than the tool waits. Ask the assistant to check the conversion again in a minute. |
